Building Britain’s Future One Brick At A Time

The UK Contractors Group (UKCG) is in the midst of a campaign titled Creating Britain’s Future, which aims to breathe new life into the nation’s construction sector. The campaign focuses on the importance of the role played by the construction industry in the UK economy as a whole, and aims to prompt the Government to step up investment in the sector.

Economic Significance

According to the campaign website, the annual turnover in Britain’s construction sector is £100 billion a full 10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Approximately three million people are employed in construction throughout the UK, and the majority of the country’s 3000 000 construction companies is comprised of SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises), which play an integral role in economic growth, particularly in the wake of the global financial crisis.

The UKCG, which represents over 30 of the United Kingdom’s most renowned construction firms, hopes to stimulate industry growth and promote job creation through the Creating Britain’s Future campaign, which includes numerous case studies exploring the effects of the construction sector on Britain both socially and economically.

Changing Industry, Changing Lives

Construction workers are responsible for creating our homes, offices, schools, hospitals and transport infrastructure; their effect on our lives is present wherever we go. We rely on the sector for so much, and it’s only been improving further in recent years. Research shows that the UK’s construction productivity reached its highest level ever last year; not only that, but energy consumption and waste have both been dramatically cut (by a third and a half respectively) in the past 5 years, and industry accidents have dropped by 25% in the last 10 years.

We can only expect the sector to become safer and more sustainable in the decade to come.

Calls for Contractors to Collaborate

This national campaign is also taking place on a regional level; it has already launched in Manchester and Birmingham, and is set to come to Leeds this month. The UKCG hopes to influence some important legislative changes where the industry is concerned in the near future, as well as encouraging more contractors to work together towards an even higher industry standard.

Stronger Government investment in the construction sector will have a far-reaching impact on numerous related industries throughout the United Kingdom. Let’s hope the UKCG achieves their goals with this exciting and innovative industry-wide campaign, so we can all build a brighter future for Britain.
