Instead of designing the office from the highest level, talk to the people who’ll be working in this environment every day your staff. Although you may be a fantastic boss and reward your employees when they go above-and-beyond the call of duty, nothing really supports a staff member as much as an office space designed to cater for their needs. By listening to their proposals and concerns, you can make their business area a pleasure to work in for everyone.


When you can’t see your employees under the mountain of paperwork, you know you’ve gone somewhere wrong in the design of the building. A simple design specification, which is often overlooked, is the storage needed to keep your staff’s work in order. Not only will this create a better feeling of space, but it saves time and faffing around with papers, trying to locate important documents.


Your employee could be fantastic at their job, but productivity and motivation will plummet if you don’t get your ergonomics right. Cheap or poorly designed furniture can lead to serious back pain for your staff, which will ultimately result in sick days. The furniture will last longer if you invest in high quality models and your employees will be happier.

If your walls are solid, knock in some windows. The natural light will help improve the mood of your employees and the entire room will feel less claustrophobic. Human beings are not made to operate in consistently bright, artificial light.

Be Aesthetically Pleasing

Talk to your staff and see what they think about design. Offices shouldn’t be bland and drab; they should represent what your company is about and provide a cheery environment to work in. The general colour scheme can be put to a vote, or you can stick with the colours of your company logo. Either way, avoid boring cream walls.

Pixar is famous for its unconventional office spaces. Staff work in small huts which they can design as they like! Take a leaf out of Pixar’s book and give your teams the power to put together their own area. This way, the personality of each department is reflected in the space which they work and teams will feel more inspired to co-operate together. Assigning design over to a department is a team-building exercise in itself!

Choose Your Layout Wisely

Cubicles in an office are great for introverted members of staff, but to stimulate a more communicative and casual area, open-plan offices are best. This layout promotes teamwork, rather than isolation, and means that it’s easier to bounce ideas around the office for more innovative solutions.
