Are you ready to hit the road? Picking the right hotel can make or break your traveling experience. Your lodging plays a big part in how much you enjoy your trip, as staying in accommodations which vibe with you can create a more pleasurable experience. Even budget travelers can find hotels which are clean and provide excellent overall service if you are willing to do a bit of legwork on the research front. Take the time to do your due diligence in order to find an establishment which works for you.
Does the hotel provide you with a reliable internet connection? If you are working online or even if you simply want to be able to call family and friends on Skype having a strong, reliable connection can make all the difference in the world. Ask around on the internet, or simply hit some of the popular review sites online to gain a better idea if your potential lodging provides you with a strong connection. In this day and age, this is one of the things that reviewers are likely to mention in their assessment.
How far is the hotel located from restaurants, night clubs or any other venue which you might be frequenting during your stay? Yes, you can always take a taxi cab or some form of public transport but it does help if your hotel is within walking distance of local establishments. Research the convenience factor to make your stay a bit easier on your legs, and your wallet; if you do not want to spend too much time walking or too much money paying for transport from your hotel to the local restaurants, or shopping centers.
It also helps to know if you are situated near the airport. Again, you will likely need to rely on private transport to get to and from the airport, if you are flying, but simply knowing how far you need to travel from the airport can save you a ton of time during transit. I recently had to wake at 3:20 AM for an early morning flight because our hotel was located over 50 minutes from the airport. Not the ideal situation but being the traveler that I am, I always take these moments in stride.
Demand a clean hotel experience by doing research on some of the more common online review sites. Travel sites provide you with plenty of customer reviews to gauge whether or not a hotel is up to your standards in terms of cleanliness. To some individuals the cleanliness factor is no big deal but it is a big deal for many travelers. At the end of a long, enjoyable but tiring day you do not want to walk in to the bathroom to see cockroaches on the floor. Or you might not be a fan of old, dank stairways, or a dated design, or dirty walls that have not been painted for years.
Again, since I have been traveling for almost two years I know what I like in a hotel room and what I do not like. Having a clean room can make all the difference in the world as you want to be able to relax and sleep or lounge around without worrying about any critters making their way into your bed.
Most of all, embrace the unexpected. The hotel bragging about hooking you up with an outstanding internet connection might be a dud when it comes to hopping online. I have stayed in more than one hotel during my current trip where the connection was not as good as billed, and again I just learn to embrace the unexpected and chalk these moments up to being a traveler. Be at peace, do your research and enjoy the trip, and realize that any hotel stay is temporary, anyway.
